Dorm Life
MLS has almost one hundred years of experience in housing students of high school age.
Dormitory Living
Most rooms in the dormitory have been remodeled or reconditioned within the past five years. Each dormitory resident is supplied with a bed, a chest of drawers, and closet space. Many rooms also include study desks. However, scheduled study periods are conducted in other rooms. Dormitory students may study in one of two supervised Study Centers, in a comfortable study lounge, in a four to six-person study rooms, in the computer room, or in the library. Each student is expected to provide a mattress pad, bed linens, towels, pillow and blankets. If fitted sheets are preferred, all dormitory mattresses are "long singles." Students may choose to furnish their rooms with stereos, televisions, desk lamps, personal computers, and video games. Rugs and extra furniture require the permission of the dean before being placed in a room. Personal VCR's and DVD players are not permitted. Fire codes prohibit the use of cooking units such as hot pots and popcorn poppers in dorm rooms. A microwave is available for use in the dorm lobby. Beds must be made daily and rooms kept in good order. Each residence hall has coinoperated laundry equipment for use by students. Storage space is available for bicycles.
Supervision - The dean of students, an experienced parish pastor, supervises a staff of 2-3 men, all graduates of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, and 2-3 women, all graduates of Martin Luther College.
Interdorm Office (IDO) - An office that serves both the boys’ and girls’ dormitories is staffed between 7:30 am and 11:30 pm. It can be reached at 989-799-7554 or ido@mlsem.org.
Roommates - Rooms have two, three, or four occupants, depending on size. Roommates are assigned by the Dean unless requests are made.
Bed Size - The beds require a 66” by 102” flat twin and 39” by 80” fitted twin. Both JC Penney and Sears carry these extra-long sheets.
Hangers - Hangers are not provided in the rooms, so occupants must bring them along with the clothing.
Money & Possessions - We expect students to respect the property of others. Label clothes, CDs, and other personal belongings. Don’t have lots of money on campus. Use the safe in the IDO. Keep lockers and rooms locked. If anything is lost or missing, please report it immediately at the IDO.
Video Games - Students are permitted to bring game systems and video games for use in their dorm rooms. Games rated “M” for “Mature” or other games considered offensive are not to be brought to school and will be returned home.
TV's/VCR's/DVD players -Students are allowed to have T.V.’s in their dorm rooms (Freshman> after the first semester). However, VCR’s and DVD players are not allowed. Any videos or DVD’s will be returned home.
Internet Usage - All students have network access to the internet through their student accounts. Network access is available to students in our computer rooms and the library. Wireless access is also available in specific areas of campus.
Please note, however, that internet use by students is not allowed in the dormitory at any time.
Health Services - A nurse is on duty during morning hours
each school day. She keeps each student's health history record. She can be reached at 989-793-3395. An athletic
trainer is present at most interscholastic athletic events and many practices,
and is available on a regular basis to assist any student, including non-athletes.
A standard fee paid by students covers the services of these professionals.
The cost of visiting a physician or the hospital is billed directly to
parents.
Counseling -Personal and academic counseling is encouraged whenever a student is struggling with issues – whether academically, socially or spiritually. The faculty and dorm staff are ready to assist any student with any need they might have. Parents are encouraged to contact school administration whenever a situation arises.
Chapel -Scripture says about our God, “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Rom. 11:36)It is therefore expected that all students on campus attend the morning and evening chapel as part of their daily schedule. Commuting students are welcome to join in evening chapel when on campus.
Dress -Students are expected to dress neatly and nicely. That means wearing clothes that are clean, “new looking” and proper for a Christian. Pants shouldn’t sag low or show the mid-riff. At no time should a student wear clothes that advertise alcohol, tobacco, bands, or anything that contradicts Christian conduct. Nice shorts may be worn in August, September and May.
Car Riding/Driving -Commuting students who drive are expected to park in their assigned spots in the MLS parking lot, and to make sure any rider in their car has first received permission to do so. They are to turn in all car keys at the Administration Office during the school day.($5.00 fine if not turned in.)
Dormitory students who have a vehicle on campus are expected to ask permission at the IDO each time they wish to use their vehicle and are expected to turn in all keys at the IDO whenever they are on campus.
Dormitory students are to ask permission whenever they wish to ride in a vehicle and are to check out and in at the IDO.<
Weekend Plans -Dormitory students are to indicate their weekend plans on the PHLEX computer by Thursday afternoon and state whether they are staying on campus, going home or to a friend’s house. We expect both sets of parents to give permission for any weekend visits to a friend’s house. This is to be on file in the IDO before leaving the dorm. We expect parents to be at home whenever a student hosts a person for the weekend.
Dormitory students are expected back on campus by 7:00PM after the weekend unless otherwise communicated.Drivers must check in students returning after 7:00 PM.
Special note: Under normal circumstances, dorm students are not permitted to stay overnight at a friend’s house during the week.
Planned Absences -It is possible to be excused from classes for special situations. This is to be cleared by Prof. Weihrauch at least 2 weeks in advance. He will explain the policy.
Study Halls - Supervised study halls are scheduled for dormitory students in the late afternoon and evening. The number of study halls varies according to grade level and grade point average. Study halls may be taken in one of the designated study areas in the dormitory, in the computer lab, or in the library. Students schedule their own study periods around such things as athletic practices, choir or drama rehearsals, group meetings, and social events.
Cell Phones -Cell phones are a good way for dorm students to keep in touch with mom or dad while here at school. Please note, however, that the use of cell phones in the dormitories after bed times is prohibited.
Things Forbidden -The use or possession of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, or non-prescribed controlled drugs is forbidden. Violators face discipline up to expulsion and lose eligibility according to the provisions of the MLS Extracurricular Code. A student may not possess weapons on campus. Any knives, bows or guns brought onto campus for hunting must be checked in immediately with a member of the dorm staff. Expulsion from school is automatic for the following reasons: driving under the influence, hosting a gathering of students at which the host permits controlled substances to be consumed, having an unauthorized school key, and being in the wrong dormitory without an acceptable reason.
