Course Descriptions
Curriculum
MLS has a single course of study which is designed to equip every student to meet the enrollment requirements of Martin Luther College. The course also exceeds the standards set for admission to public colleges in the state of Michigan. Students who complete this curriculum with a 2.5 cumulative grade point average or better will receive a favorable recommendation for college enrollment.
There are no secular subjects at MLS. Every course is taught in the light of God’s Word. Each class is an opportunity for the teacher, a minister of the gospel, to apply both law and gospel to students in a way that will build up their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Course Descriptions
Students are expected to take a full schedule of academic hours each school day. In the course descriptions that follow, a code in parentheses indicates whether a course is offered for one semester (1s) or two semesters (2s). It also shows the number of class hours scheduled for the course during each 6-day class cycle (cf. below for information on the class cycle). For example, "5h" means a class meets on five out of each six cycle days.
Special Courses
English as a Second Language 031-034 - Practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writingEnglish; guidance for homework assignments (2s/5h)
Course in Piano and Organ
To graduate from MLS, students must meet one half of the piano requirement set by MartinLuther College for its graduates. Normally this can be done through one to two years of
instruction.
Individual piano lessons may take the place of the freshman music course (Music 121)
when a student is sufficiently advanced in music. All sophomores are required to take
piano. Juniors and seniors may elect piano. Organ may be substituted for piano when a
student has achieved advanced status in piano. Students may choose to arrange lessons
off campus from a private teacher and request credit.
Keyboard lessons are a half period long (22 minutes) and are scheduled once every six
school days. There are four and a half practice hours (45 minutes) scheduled between
lessons. Each semester closes with an evaluation by a jury comprised of the members
of the keyboard faculty. Each semester successfully completed earns two hours' credit.
