About MLS
Welcome to Michigan Lutheran Seminary!
MLS exists for a clear and enduring purpose: Encouraging for Ministry and Equipping for Life. For more than a century, the Lord has used this school to guide young people toward lives of Christian service – especially the ministry of the gospel – while also preparing them to live faithfully and confidently in whatever vocation God places before them.
Ministry in Action: At MLS, students witness and experience the work of the gospel every day. Our goal is not simply to talk about ministry, but to place students in an environment where they can experience the joy and blessing of service so they might imagine themselves also serving in the public ministry.
Learning with Purpose: A strong liberal arts based education equips students with skills that endure far beyond the high school years. Rigorous study in the classroom – grounded in Scripture and strengthened through language, the arts, sciences, and critical thinking – forms habits of mind that prepare students for college, ministry training, and a lifetime of faithful Christian leadership. At MLS, learning is not only about knowledge for today but wisdom that will serve students throughout their lives.
Seminary Family for Life: Perhaps the most cherished aspect of MLS are the relationships that are formed here. Students live, learn, worship, and grow together in a Christ-centered community where friendships deepen because they are grounded in Jesus and his Word. These bonds often last a lifetime, creating a family of encouragement and support for life.
Together, these three pillars shape a distinctive experience – one that encourages young people to serve our Savior in ministry while also equipping them with a faith, wisdom, and family that will bless them for life.

Encouraging For Ministry. Equipping For Life.
Michigan Lutheran Seminary (MLS) provides an outstanding educational experience to equip students for Christian living and the public ministry. MLS is one of two schools owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) with the specific purpose of encouraging students to consider becoming pastors and teachers in the WELS.
Everyone here encourages and teaches students through the grace of the gospel, nurturing faith through regular and diverse worship opportunities and ministry experiences. MLS faculty, coaches, and staff regard each student in our Seminary Family as a redeemed child of God. We teach and inspire through the lens of both law and gospel, providing counsel, encouragement, and loving Christian discipline. Our Statement of Belief at MLS is consistent with that of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
The expression “Seminary Family” is often heard on campus. It is used by students and faculty to describe the close bond that forms at MLS. Our common Christian faith ties our student body together in love and concern for one another. Students worship, study, practice, compete and eat meals together. Friendships become so strong that classmates consider each other brothers and sisters, members for life of the Seminary Family.
Faculty, administration, coaches, and staff take seriously the great trust parents and guardians place in MLS, supporting and teaching each student in humility, acknowledging their God-given role as spiritual guides, educators, caretakers, and parental representatives. The MLS faculty encourages each student to use his or her talents in academics, performance, competition, and Christian service to the glory of God.
