Academics

Encouraging for Ministry, Equipping for Life

MLS academics are focused on a balanced and challenging curriculum that includes religion, languages, science, technology, math, history, and the arts, with a special emphasis on vocal and instrumental music skills. Students complement academic work with extracurriculars, where they are encouraged to develop leadership, interpersonal communication skills, and sportsmanship skills. You can view our MLS School Catalog here or below.

MLS encourages all students to consider the high calling of the public ministry. If they pursue another vocation, their MLS education is still incredibly valuable as they grow into other roles of Christian service. Students learn to think deeply, solve problems collaboratively, and apply learning in ways that reflect both knowledge and discernment. All of these are important qualities for higher education and for life.

No matter what field or vocation graduates decide to enter, the education they receive at MLS prepares them to succeed.

A Diverse Student Body Enhances Learning

MLS students experience a rich diversity of cultures through the admission and incorporation of international students into the student body. Each year, anywhere between 10 to 15 percent of the student body hails from outside of the United States, coming to us through our WELS foreign mission partners all over the world.

The MLS Educational Philosophy

Michigan Lutheran Seminary seeks to provide a classical education that centers on the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel provides the foundation that encourages students toward a future in ministry by instilling in them the Biblical knowledge necessary to proclaim Jesus Christ and him crucified. Through training in the humanities and studying the order of the natural world, our students gain the communication skills, historical perspective, and wisdom that equips them for life. Whether through the proclamation of music and song, the logic of God’s created order, or the importance of language, we train the whole student to serve as a faithful steward in whatever vocation God calls them to pursue – whether in ministry to the church or as a fundamental lay leader in their congregation and community.

Parent Perspective

I encourage you to take a leap of faith, pray to our loving God about the decision, and give MLS the opportunity to “train up a child in the way he should go” …

I’m most thankful for the foundation I had in my faith coming out of MLS. Attending a public university (after MLS) was overwhelming and nerve racking at times, but I was confident in my faith in God and my faith didn’t easily waiver when pressured by outside influences. Even though I didn’t end up being a called worker, MLS prepared me to be a faithful and active member at my church and school which has been a huge blessing to me!

I am so thankful for my time at MLS! I left with a firm foundation in my faith, a great education, lifelong Christian friends, opportunities to share my faith with others and practical teaching experience. While I decided not to go into the public ministry, I still use my experiences at MLS when I give seminars at my job, plan outreach events at church, encourage others in their faith and volunteer at our school. I am thankful that God continues to use my gifts to further His kingdom.

MLS gives their students so many different opportunities to learn skills that will be used throughout their entire life. My composition/speech class and student teaching experience gave me the skills I needed to now give seminars at my job. The concert choir furthered my love of music and I continue to sing in the church choir. Canvassing at a mission church gave me the confidence to introduce myself to new faces at our church and school. The list goes on and on of the ways that I continue to use my experiences at MLS in my daily life and to benefit God’s kingdom.

Don’t count MLS out if your child doesn’t seem interested in being a called worker! God’s kingdom needs dedicated and passionate lay people in our congregations too! Plus, you never know what God has planned for your child!
